Commentaire descriptif

Ever since childhood, Roberto the termite dreamed of becoming an architect. His mother would remind him not to play with his food—be it oak, maple or pine. But Roberto was too busy using it to build structures. The language is playful; puns and evocative expressions will give young readers pause for thought. Phrases such as, “against the grain,” “hungry to start a new life” and “hope didn’t come cheap” are printed in boldface type, inviting discussion about their meanings. Illustrations are a compelling mix of hand-rendered artwork and collage. A fascinating diorama-like spread depicts the “flea-bag” hotel where Roberto lives while he tries to get work. Under a bare light bulb, he builds beds for all the bed bugs in his room. Another spread riffs off famous architecture, with desks comprised of elements from buildings by Wright, Van der Rohe and Gaudi. The book’s message of courage and conviction is realized when Roberto forges his own path. He dreams, plans and builds an entire neighbourhood for all the homeless city bugs. Children will appreciate that the story finishes with more food-play. But since Roberto has become famous, parent termites now urge their children to “Be creative!”
