This sweet and funny story uses deadpan language to convey its message of patience, persistence and imaginative solutions. A young boy, determined to catch a star from the sky, tries many amusing approaches. “Getting up early in the morning would be best… the star would be tired from being up all night.” Lassoing the star doesn’t work, nor does his spaceship (it “had run out of petrol last Tuesday when he flew to the moon”). Gorgeous illustrations use simple forms to create expressive characters in radiant watercolour settings. Pier posts are reflected in a sunset-yellow sea, as the boy tries to show a seagull how to carry him up to the first evening star. When he spots a star shimmering under the darkening waters, he can almost reach it himself. His stick legs rush to the shore, where it will drift in. Young readers will be pleased when the boy’s tenacity finally pays off—in the form of a sea star, “washed up on the bright, golden sand.” Readers of all ages will appreciate the final bittersweet image of the boy with his sea star, under a canopy of glittering sky.
