Commentaire descriptif

Home in Cambodia might be a house on stilts; in Mauritania, it could be made of clay. Xin’s home in China is carved from rock. This sturdy Oxfam-sponsored book features examples of a variety of homes around the world. Each large, colourful photograph is accompanied by a short, large-print text that gives some interesting details about the house and the country in which it is found. The children in each picture comment on their home via dialogue bubbles: “I have to crouch down to get in!” says Aluka of Uganda. “Our caravan is our home wherever we stop.” explains Yanni of Romania. At the end, a labelled world map pinpoints the location of the 11 different homes presented. This soft-board non-fiction book will have children reflecting on how homes are determined by climate, culture and geography. But whether it is brick or earth, rounded or flat-topped, built to warm or built to cool, home is always where a child’s heart is.

On the map, locate the countries featured in the book.

:

With a friend, discuss which house you would like to live in and explain your choice. Which home is your least favourite? Why?

Complete a Venn diagram comparing your home with one from the book.

:

Look at the map at the end of the book. Practise saying the names of the countries.

:

Surmise what the homes in the book could be made of.

:

Make a chart to compare your home with those in the book (e.g. the country, building materials, one fun fact).

:
