Pistes d'exploration

Discuss why the family had to move. What is a refugee? What was the alternative and was it feasible? What will be the biggest impact on the children?

Write a response about the use of symbols (the fish being the symbol of hope). Connect the story to what is going on in the world today.

Commentaire descriptif

Based on a true event in Bosnia-Herzegovina and told in the voice of young Viktor, this tale of hope and revitalization relates the story of one family’s experience of persecution and war. The language allows small events to suggest a bigger picture of upheaval and deprivation. A fleeing family passes through on a tractor; they own a clever dog. Viktor assuages his envy: “Having a father in the underground was better than having a dog who could do tricks,” but without perfect success: “I watched them leave the next morning. We don’t have a tractor. . . . We would have to walk.” The illustrations recall the style of impressionist painting—highly suitable for the rural setting of the story. A hint of gold appears among otherwise muted colours: in a bird’s nest, in the fish bowl. The gold also flares dangerously as fire burns across a farm, returning to warm proportions at the refugee camp. When the family can finally return home again, they must face the devastation left by rampaging soldiers. The book’s final message of transformation and renewal will surprise and delight readers—the family pond is found to be filled with goldfish. Amidst the horrors of war, bustling new life has grown. This densely written picture book is sure to spark discussion about the effects of war on the innocent.
