Commentaire descriptif

Unhei has just moved to the United States with her family and she is having trouble fitting in. With a Korean name that is difficult to pronounce she worries that her classmates, like the kids on the bus, will tease and make fun of her. So rather than introduce herself on her first day of school, she decides to pick a new name, and the class responds helpfully by filling a glass jar with a myriad of choices. In the end, her inner strength guides her and leads the class into a worthwhile lesson on the meaning of names. Large expressive paintings complement a text peppered with the authentic cultural details of Unhei's world. As a read-aloud, this book is an excellent resource for diverse classrooms, offering a rich opportunity to explore some of the cultural and linguistic differences among students. Readers may be inspired to investigate the history of their own names.
