Pistes d'exploration

Follow along as the story is read aloud and join in with the repetitive text.

Talk about (or research) what frogs do in the winter months.

Write out instructions for putting on your winter clothes. Use descriptive words for the items of clothing (eg: blue hat, frilly top, etc.) Have a friend follow your instructions to see if they work.

Write a story of what Froggy would do if he actually went outside to play in the snow.

Read along with the class, emphasizing the words that describe the sounds. Take different parts (Mother, Froggy).

Act out the story with the class.

Using clothing props, drawings or photographs, make a class poster of your winter clothes and describe how you get dressed to play outside. Personalize it with colours: (1) I slip on my white underwear, (2) I button my green shirt, etc. Do the same for when you come inside and take your clothes off. Use cloze sentences to help you (Cycle One) or write the description by yourself (Cycle Two).

Commentaire descriptif

Another in a popular series of picture books about an endearing frog, this one is about the ordeal of getting dressed on a winter day. Despite his mother’s advice that frogs should stay asleep until the snow melts, Froggy is awake and eager to play outside. The only problem is that he keeps forgetting to put on certain necessary articles of clothing—including underwear! Constantly going back inside to take everything off and start all over again, he is finally too exhausted to continue and crawls back into bed. This lively read-aloud about the benefits of listening to parents is built around humorous but simple, repetitive text (e.g. the mother constantly calling, “Frroooooggyyyy!” to remind him what clothing he's forgotten) and onomatopoeia (“Froggy put on his socks - zoop! Pulled on his boots - zup! Put on his hat - zat! Tied on his scarf - zwit!). Bright, bold artwork alternates between full bleed images and spare but vivid sketches of the rambunctious protagonist against the snow-white page.
