Commentaire descriptif

In this picture book, a little girl contemplates colour and how it makes people feel. Lyric language juxtaposes her own reactions with those of her family and friends. Brief lines in bold type will encourage progress through the text for beginning readers. Evocative metaphors and similes will spark youngsters’ imaginations; they may wish to discuss their own responses to the different colours. “‘Look,’ says Grandpa. ‘Green is young. Like a small stem stretching toward the light.’ But my green is as old as a forestAnd the statue in the park.” Gorgeous, painterly illustrations array the atmospheric possibilities of every colour. The ideas in the text are rendered with expressive, sketchy lines. Pink is a luminous spread, where dancers lift lightly on ballerina feet, except for our narrator, who swats at insects while a thick ribbon of bubble gum stretches between her ballet slipper and the floor. Gray is the ominous gloom of the storm outside, battering against her house. But it’s also the armchair, and Grandma’s dress, as the little girl sits on her lap, “my gray is as cozy as a curled-up kittenAnd the sound of soft rain on the roof.”
