Commentaire descriptif

Bird wakes up in a grumpy mood. He won’t eat; he won’t play; he won’t even fly. “ ‘Looks like I’m walking today,’ said Bird.” All the animals he meets are surprised to see him walking. His mood is tested as first Sheep, then Rabbit, Raccoon, Beaver and Fox greet him and ask: “What are you doing?” Strong language employs rich and amusing variation with each new exchange. Bird tells Rabbit “I’m walking.… It’s no fun.” To Beaver he says, “Let me give you a hint.… You do it by placing one foot in front of the other.” When Fox arrives, Bird shouts, “I’m just walking, okay?” The bold, expressive animal cartoons have a powerful impact. Gorgeous black outlines and vivid colours cavort against artistic backgrounds. As an impromptu game of follow-the-leader begins among the animals, sunspots float against an orange background of brushwork birches. An indigo sky supports Bird as he jumps into the air, for the other animals to follow. Suddenly Bird realizes he’s grumpy no more. Readers of all ages will delight in the unexpected and playful finish, when a cheerful Bird invites everyone to “fly back to my nest for a snack.” The final image shows the friends all balanced, high on Bird’s branch: “And they did.”
