Discuss the different emotions featured in the book.
Generate a sentence for each emotion in the book, explaining a time when you felt that emotion. (I felt sad when my friend moved away.)
Consider the author's use of colour, font, text style and subject matter for each emotion. Identify how they 'match' the emotions (e.g. the illustration for sad has drab colours and droopy leaves on the tree).
Read along with the rhymes. Act them out with facial expressions and body language.
Make a graphic organizer with the emotions in the book and the colours, words and expressions that go with them.
Talk about times when you feel happy, sad, etc.
Make an I Feel class book of emotions with illustrations/photos/pictures (e.g. I feel annoyed when I can't watch my favourite tv show.)
My Blue Is Happy, In My Heart: A Book of Feelings
This simple book about feelings, featuring vivid, expressive drawings, simple rhyming text and a playful font, will help children identify their emotions and recognize that feelings are a normal part of life. Double-page spreads of pastel illustrations capture each of 12 showcased emotions—“happy” is cheerfully yellow, “sad” is a melancholic mix of blues and greens, “scared” is in squiggly, white scrawl on a black page. Disappointment, shyness and frustration are also among the list of emotions explored. A final note to parents at the end offers practical advice to help children describe and cope with the myriad emotions in their lives. This book could launch a follow-up discussion about feelings and empathy. It may also be used with older children in conjunction with a lesson on adjectives or as a resource for character development in a creative writing activity.
