Commentaire descriptif

Little Hoot is a happy owlet. He likes school, he likes playing with his friends, he even likes practising owl things, such as pondering and staring. But he doesn't like staying up late. The illustrations are both artistic and adorable, offering vivid colours and a delicate range of pen markings for outline and definition. In one image, the clock shows 10 p.m. as Little Hoot sulks and Papa Owl pours himself a cup of coffee. “I don’t give a hoot what time your friends go to bed. In this family, we go to bed late. Rules of the roost.” The irony of Little Hoot’s predicament will not be lost on young readers. They may have suggestions for other great story topics along these lines: being allowed to eat only candy, for example. The language skillfully incorporates owl-like vocabulary with traditional family dialogue: “‘One whole hour?’ he boo-whoo’d. ‘One whole hour,’ she cooed.” Even young readers who hate bedtime will celebrate when Little Hoot, finally released from playtime, dives into his nest and sleeps.
