Draw an outline of a person on a large piece of paper (hint: use a tall student as a model). Choose one important fact from each section and write it on an index card or sticky note. Tape it onto the outline. Add more facts, drawings or details to complete the body.
Create a poster listing some of the data found in the book (e.g. We have two lungs. Babies need sixteen hours of sleep.)
Make a diagram of your body and label all the parts you know.
Create an All About Me page or book. List the characteristics that make you unique and share these with the class.
Read the table of contents and predict what the chapters will be about (fighting germs, fueling my body, staying healthy).
With a friend, make a diagram of your body and label all the parts you know.
Make a graphic organizer to explain the functions of different parts of the body.
Write five number facts from the book and share them with a partner.
This small, fully illustrated non-fiction book offers surprisingly comprehensive information about our bodies and how they work. Brief, clear language in large boldface type explains systems such as “My Cells”, “My Skeleton” and “My Blood” in spreads that are rich with simple diagrams and photos of children. The section on “Fighting Germs” offers young readers a scientific perspective on the function of snot and scabs. “Staying Healthy” demonstrates how, by understanding our bodies and taking good care of them, we can enjoy them better. Dynamic, quality photographs of children make effective illustrations for the subject material. Young readers will relate to a tight shot of a boy as he examines a scab on his knee; a girl weeps to illustrate “My Glands”. The images show a range of ethnicities and are supported by bright, engaging diagrams and spot illustrations, with information-rich captions and sidebars. The book includes a table of contents, as well as back material, an index, a glossary, questions for consideration, and further reading and research recommendations. Altogether this book is appealing, child-friendly and a very useful learning tool.
