Perform actions as you read: Swishy, swashy (arms side to side); Splash, splash (swimming motions); Squelch, squerch (feet up and down slowly); Stumble, trip (run on spot and trip); Hooo wooo (whole body sways); Tip toe. Repeat rapidly in reverse while retreating.
Compare this version to the camp song: “Going on a Lion Hunt,” through a sequencing sheet.
With a partner, write the text of a different animal hunt. Use a variety of places and actions. Perform your new version for the class.

Compare and contrast the book We're Going on a Bear Hunt to the camp song “Going on a Lion Hunt.”
A family goes on an expedition in search of a bear but encounters a number of obstacles along the way—tall grass, oozy mud, a river, a big dark forest and a snowstorm. The melodic qualities and structural repetition of text and layout make this a great read-aloud book that readily lends itself to role-playing and clapping games. The pages alternate from black-and-white pencil drawings, which present each obstacle that comes their way, and gentle watercolour illustrations showing the family overcoming it. In each case, wending their way through the obstacle entails a catchy onomatopoeic phrase whose font size increases as the words get louder and louder. Readers will love the sound of such phrases as “squelch, squerch” as the family plods through thick mud and “hooo wooo” as they push through a whirling snowstorm. This fun and interactive book has multiple applications for teachers wishing to focus on listening and speaking skills, or to introduce elements of grammar and punctuation, such as prepositions and exclamation marks.
