In this modern retelling of the classic fairy tale, Jack and his mother run a successful fast food café out of the side of an old truck. When business dries up, Jack trades their last few pennies for an old can of magic baked beans and thus begins the GIANT adventure. While this plot has familiar elements, it takes place in an urban setting and involves a baked beanstalk, a giant chicken, a radio and a friendly giant who prepares some lunch for Jack, glad for a little company and a much needed break from counting his pile of gold coins. In this “happily ever after” version, Jack helps him find something more fulfilling to do with his life … and winds up saving his family’s failing business. Lush and detailed, the digitally rendered illustrations have cinematic appeal and effectively evoke a bygone era of old-fashioned cars, buildings and clothing styles.
