I Have the Right to Be a Child, What Is a Community?
An important message about good health is delivered to early readers, while illustrations promote awareness of lives of children around the world. This is a powerful way to convey to youngsters the important similarities we all share as humans. Simple sentences in large type encourage beginning readers. They will pore over gorgeous photographs of children in new and familiar circumstances. Every photo is identified with its country of origin. Discussion about living circumstances of children around the world will inevitably arise from this book. “Healthy kids need clean water to drink” shows a young Ghanaian girl, carrying a baby on her back while pouring water from a large bucket—that’s resting on her head—into the family water jar. Kids will love the spread, “We use a toilet, a potty, a privy, a loo, a WC, an outhouse, or a pit latrine,” which shows photos of children using a variety of facilities. A forward by Melinda French Gates, co-chair of the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, gives background in comprehensible, child-friendly language. Back material includes a world map showing the locations of photos and a brief expansion on all the themes addressed in the spreads.
