Discuss the illustrations and the poem. How is the interpretation of the poem unique in each illustration?
Choose one of the illustrations and use it as a starting point for writing a story.
Choose one of the pages of verse and continue that poem for a few more lines/stanzas. Present the poem as you show the illustrations to other students.
Read along with the teacher.
Imagine you are inside the pictures. Talk about what you are doing, and what you see, hear, smell and feel.
Use a photo, drawing or magazine picture to create your own “Imagine a day when ...”
This read-aloud companion to the acclaimed Imagine A Night also stretches the limits of visual exploration with stunning acrylic paintings that engage children’s imaginations and inspire their creativity. Rather than tell a straightforward story, the book gently invites readers to imagine days when the ordinary becomes extraordinary: “Imagine a day when grace and daring are all we need to build a bridge .… Imagine a day when the edge of the map is only the beginning of what we can explore.” Surrealist full-page images, reminiscent of the works of MC Escher and Rene Magritte, convey the theme of endless possibilities by depicting magical and strangely improbable feats: on a cloudy day, a girl slowly releases thousands of blue balloons that rise up and become blue sky; children on an ordinary tree-swing swoop majestically and magically over their small town. Embedded in the poetic, lyrical text are important lessons about living a full and rich life. Each page is a new invitation, another challenge, to take a risk or see the world in a different way: the perfect book for dreaming about what could be.
