This wordless picture book adopts the effect of a backward zoom to bring its message to readers. From the first image of a mysterious jagged landscape to the last white speck in a sea of darkness, readers of all ages will be compelled to turn the page to find out what happens next. What happens is a journey of multiple discoveries, each page bringing a new perspective to the last. Bathers at a swimming pool turn out to be passengers on an ocean cruise liner, which in turn is actually an advertisement on a city bus. The success of the book lies in the illustration’s ability to submerge readers in the world of a given image, only to force them to re-imagine its context with the next. Young readers may be encouraged to create their own stories from the curious sequence of images. The illustration style could be described as simplified realism. Defined outlines filled with strong colours and limited detailing allow for recognition without distraction. In this way, the mind-boggling effect of ever-changing contexts is given centre stage. From the top of a rooster’s comb to a tiny point of light in space, this book is truly a journey, as well as a fun-park for the imagination.
