Perform the actions as the book is read aloud.
Identify where each animal lives, the types of noises it makes, what it eats, etc.
Choose an animal and create a poster that highlights what makes it interesting and unique.
Draw a large picture of yourself and label as many of your body parts as you can.
Do the physical actions and repeat the text as the book is read aloud.
Practise retelling the story using word cards to match the animals, parts of the body and actions.
Use the actions in the story to describe a sport or an activity you can do (e.g. I can dance, wiggle my hips, wave my arms, turn my head, stomp my foot).
Caramba, Wolf Won't Bite!, Clap Your Hands, If You're a Monster and You Know It
Children needing a wiggle break will love this read-aloud built on a repetitive structure that goes like this: “I am a giraffe and I bend my neck. Can you do it?” To which the child in the story, mimicking the movement, responds: “I can do it!” The narrative continues this way, with an entire menagerie—elephant, donkey, camel, crocodile and more—boasting about the things they can do with their bodies and the child on the next page imitating their movements. Bright collaged illustrations and predictable language structures work together to provide an interactive experience that will have children wriggling, thumping, clapping and stomping to try and keep up with this lively bunch of animals. They will be having so much fun that they won’t even realize that it’s actually a lesson on body parts, not to mention animals and verbs.
