Choose your favourite letter. Summarize the key points for that page. Present the information to the class.

In small groups, create your own alphabet book using other subjects, e.g. math, science, etc. Include short definitions for each word as well as illustrations.

Brainstorm a list of people who have taught you up to now (e.g. favorite teacher, coach, daycare worker, nurse etc.). Write a thank you letter to that person explaining what you have learned from him or her.

Read each page and predict words that will be included on subsequent pages. 

Choral read along with the rhyming text.

Choose a letter and contribute to a class alphabet book, using words that represent your own school and classroom.

What could be more topical for children than an alphabet book about school? With headings such as “History,” “Quizzes” and “Secretary,” readers are taken on an alphabet tour through 26 words connected with this most familiar of places. Each letter features a short rhyming verse (“Gymnasium begins with G.We show up there to have P.E.,a class that keeps us toned and trimand teaches us to lose and win”) as well as a lengthier sidebar that provides additional information for more capable readers. The large, detailed illustrations capture the essence of life of school A series of custodians, both male and female, “paint and patch and fix” things, with the ubiquitous hefty set of keys depicted on the side. A crossing guard with a bright yellow coat and large blue umbrella helps children cross the street on a rainy day. Specific to the Canadian context, with references to provincial governments, the maple leaf on the flag and Canada’s Food Guide, the book reflects the multicultural diversity of today’s schools. The book finishes with a simple short quiz, the answers to which can be found throughout the book.
