Draw and write about one of the types of transport you would like to try. Explain why it appeals to you.
Sort the key words from the text. Use a semantic map to classify different methods of transportation (on land, water, snow, ice or in the air). Add additional modes of transportation that are not mentioned in the book.
Create a timeline of how transportation/travelling has changed over time (from prehistoric times to space travel).
Write about and illlustrate a way in which you travel. Where do you go? Do you know any specifics (brand, special features) about your mode of transportation?
I Know Here, We All Go Traveling By, TheDiggers Are Coming!, Poem-Mobiles: Crazy Car Poems
Young fans of vehicles and good stories alike will engage with this enjoyable and informative book about people and how we get around—from prehistoric times to space travel. “Come follow the story of how traveling changed, and how that changed everything.” Lively and evocative language takes young readers on an epic journey through time, from ice-age hunters, first peoples’ toboggans and canoes, through explorers, their sailing ships, and the re-introduction of horses, to the invention of steam engines, automobiles and airplanes. Fun, cartoon-like illustrations bring “soft footfalls” and “ribbons of roadways” equally to life. Children will love poring over the scenes of human bustle and activity. In one spread, passengers board an airplane, while the next envisions similar space travel for humankind. The final spread depicts a park full of children—running, roller-blading, boating and riding in a stroller—and asks: “How will you travel when you go out today?” Back material titled “Did You Know?” offers a variety of interesting endnotes on the book’s theme.
