Commentaire descriptif

Mecias attends school in a rainforest reserve; his curriculum includes forestry management. Hazelwood School was designed and built specifically for sensory impaired children. Through one example after another, this book shows readers the amazing range of ways children are getting an education around the world. Remote locations, poverty, nomadic and migrant lifestyles, natural disaster—they’re all challenges successfully faced by these schools. The language describes complex concepts in clear and simple terms, with frequent headlines to guide readers through the content. An abundance of quality photos offers rich background. One image shows a red-cheeked child of the reindeer-herding Evenki, bundled in traditional clothing, cuddling one of the herd: “When teachers pack up and leave for the next camp, the children stay behind with their families. They study . . . and also spend time . . . hunting, fishing, gathering berries and caring for reindeer.” Back material includes a world map showing the location of all the schools, resources for further involvement and an index. This book is a rich source for discussion—and of hope—for the future development of our global population.
