Discuss the stitching in the illustrations. Sew a simple pillow or other craft using large-eyed needles and thread. Students with fine motor difficulties may practise lacing.
Brainstorm other modes of transportation. Describe the sounds these vehicles make and record students making them. Draw accompanying pictures for each sound and create a digital book.
Play I Spy in the classroom. Adapt the game to build word knowledge and enhance phonemic awareness (e.g. I spy a word that begins with f (floor). What words rhyme with floor?)
Use physical responses as the book is read aloud. Practise making the sounds these vehicles make.
Collect and label pictures of modes of transportation.
Discuss how you travel from one place to another (e.g. I go on vacation by plane, I go to school by bus, I visit grandma and grandpa by car).
Let's Go!: The Story of Getting From There to Here, The Diggers Are Coming!
“I spy with my little eye” a long blue train, a bright red truck, a shiny pink bike and more. An increasingly long series of vehicles follows children in a yellow school bus as it makes its way to school in this cumulative tale about transportation. More than just eye-spying, however, the children also “hear with your little ear” as members of the caravan chuff, rumble, chug-a-lug or beep on their journey along the road. Simple, rhythmic language is catchy and predictable, from the first “bye-bye” at the bus stop to the children’s arrival at the playground, ready to start another school day. Fabrics in strong primary-coloured are appliqued as cars, trucks and houses. A girl’s golden hair, wheel spokes, waves on a river and other fine details are embroidered onto the cloth, resulting in bright, folksy illustrations. The youngest readers, particularly those new to the world of school buses, will enjoy naming colours or vehicles, and counting wheels or children. Canadian children’s songwriter, Fred Penner, sings the story to an animated version of the story on the CD included at the back.
