Use your own words to explain each page as it is read aloud. In the illustrations, find letter-based images that are not mentioned in the text (e.g. the heart on the girl's sweater on the H page).
Working in small groups, choose another topic or place and write alliterative sentences for each letter, as modelled in the book.
Produce a short alphabet film or photo alphabet book on a favourite topic of your choice (e.g. Letters in Sports, Letters of Summer).
Discuss the familiar and unfamiliar words on each page. Share each other’s knowledge and use reference tools where necessary.
Draw a floor plan of the library and label as many items as possible in your drawing (shelves, big books, computers, maps, etc.).

It's a Book, The Fox in the Library
“Aisles of authors are arranged alphabetically.” So begins this book of ABCs, which can also serve to introduce young readers to the library and its various elements. Veterans of library visits will recognize and enjoy entries such as “. . . nappers nod off behind inky newspapers.” And “Story time spreads smiles on small students’ faces.” Each letter of the alphabet is printed in large, brightly coloured type, both upper- and lower-case versions. Whenever it appears in the accompanying sentence, it is printed in the same colour and in boldface type. Quirky, charming illustrations use bright colours and simple shapes with subtle shading and include careful pattern and detail. “Writers weave wonderful words with their pencils” depicts an artistic type—in hip glasses and a black sweater—with a pencil raised from her sheaf of loose leaf paper. Her words float to a group of children clutching and reading their books. Y shows “Youngsters” being taken home by mommies and daddies, with stuffed book bags and arms full of books. For “Zzzzzz,” a boy lies asleep in bed, an open book about zebras under his head.
