What Color Is My World?: The Lost History of African-American Inventors, Ten Birds, Rosie Revere, Engineer, A Native American Thought of It: Amazing Inventions and Innovations
Beginning with the wheel, this engaging, informative book features the trailblazing inventions, gadgets and gizmos that have revolutionized our lives. It also tells the stories of the inspirational people behind them. Five themed chapters cover the gamut from airplanes to Aspirin, cars to contact lenses, radio to robots. A zany section called “Total Turkeys” showcases inventions that never made it off the ground, such as chicken glasses, protective eyewear for poultry. Each spread briefly introduces an invention and is followed by a simple, straightforward text with key phrases in boldface type. Among many gems, readers will learn that in 1901, rich Londoners were the first to have their houses vacuumed by “a huge, horse-drawn gasoline-driven machine, from which a long hose would snake into their house through a window.” The fun, eye-catching layout makes it suitable for browsing or reading cover to cover. It features over 300 illustrations and photographs, “How it works” panels explaining the inner workings of inventions, and colourful speech bubbles conveying important “By the way,” “Did you know?” and “How it changed the world” facts. A detailed table of contents lists the inventions covered in each chapter. A glossary and index facilitate further research.
