Before reading, talk about what peace means to you. Record your thoughts on a chart. Using these ideas, create a class book entitled Peace Is . . .
Discuss the following expressions: leave someone in peace, peace and quiet, peace of mind, keep the peace, peace out, etc.
Become advocates for peace. Create a class pledge poster (e.g. We pledge to be kind to one another) and sign it. Add your name, or a friend’s name every time you do, say or see something that upholds the pledge.
Make a class list of the people, animals, objects, colours and shapes you notice as the book is read aloud.
Role play one of the people or animals in the story. Imagine what they are saying or thinking. Use a word list made from the book to help you.
In groups, make posters that illustrate what peace means to you. Use drawings, photos or cut out pictures. Write statements like the ones in the book: “Peace is . . .” Display the posters in your classroom or school.
It's Okay to Be Different, What Does It Mean to Be Global?
This warm-hearted, inspirational read-aloud, “dedicated to the world,” takes the difficult concept of peace and breaks it down into bite-sized morsels that younger children can understand and explore. Each page offers a creative example of what peace is such as making new friends, planting a tree and wearing new clothes. Bold full-bleed artwork features childlike drawings in vibrant blues, yellows, purples and greens. The bold black outlining is echoed in the spare, simple text that mimics a child’s handwriting. Characters represent a variety of cultures, languages and ethnicities as they incorporate peace into their daily lives. In this way, the book serves as both a valuable tool to help stimulate personal growth and a celebration of diversity and multiculturalism. A final letter from the author reminds each reader that “the world is a better place because of you!”
