Commentaire descriptif

An abundance of photos combines with simple diagrams to explain some concepts of basic anatomy to young readers. A little gymnast performs a back bend across the spread, “Bones.” Superimposed on her body is a drawing of her skeleton in action. In “Breathing,” a boy opens his mouth while a drawing of his windpipe and lungs spreads like a butterfly across his chest. A series of simple spot diagrams shows how air enters the body and passes oxygen to the blood. Rendered in fat wobbly line and filled with pale pastel colours, all anatomical drawings are suitable for even the most squeamish. Brief language in bold type makes use of caption-like layouts and headlines to draw readers into the text. Sidebars offer interesting tidbits and call for reader interaction: “Look at the straight lines. Which is longer?”; “Do you drink enough water?”. Also covered are subject areas of particular relevance to children, such as growing bodies and healing bodies: “your blood helps make a scab to seal the wound.” A glossary and index complete the back material of this attractive and engaging book about our bodies.
