Commentaire descriptif

Ruby is in love with all things red. She particularly loves the red cloak her grandmother made for her. When Ruby puts it on, she becomes Super Red Riding Hood. On a mission into the deep, dark woods, Ruby encounters “a big, rumbly, growly, terrifying sound” coming from behind a tree, and suddenly she has to rely on her wits to save herself. “Super-hero” meets Little Red Riding Hood in this modern fairy tale about a brave girl with a big heart and a hearty helping of self-confidence. The onomatopoeic sounds of the forest animals set the stage for a compelling read-aloud experience. Repetition of a key refrain sung by Ruby heightens the suspense: “Who’s afraid of the deep dark woods, the deep dark woods, the deep dark woods?… na, na, na, not me!” Bright digital illustrations capture the exchange between Ruby and the yellow-fanged wolf, licking his chops for what’s inside her box. Well-placed playful type extends the suspense. The comical twist on how the red-cloaked heroine empowers herself in her dealings with the wolf sends a message to readers about compassion and respect.
