List and discuss digital devices and how you use them. How much time do you spend using them compared to doing other activities?
Start a list of technology-related nouns and verbs. Add to the list as you read and discuss.
Draw two pictures of yourself: one in which you’re using a digital device indoors, and the other in which you’re busy outdoors. Share and compare your ideas with a small group.
Dot uses the terms reboot and recharge in different ways. Compare the two meanings. Start a class picture dictionary or anchor chart of words with multiple meanings.
Brainstorm and list communication technologies. Discuss how much time you spend on technological versus real-life communication.
As the book is read aloud, notice and collect words used to talk about technology. With a partner, write a short description for these words.
As Dot reboots and recharges, she uses the same terms in different ways. Compare the two meanings. Use the illustrations to help you write short definitions for the second set of words.
Start an ongoing class list of words with multiple meanings.
It's a Book, Goodnight iPad: A Parody for the Next Generation
This story plays with the language of interactive media. Dot is a savvy little girl who can do many things with laptops, phones and touch-pads: “tap… touch… tag.” But when, “Mom says, “Go outside, Dot! Time to Reboot! Recharge! Restart!” these same terms suddenly take on new meaning. The theme of finding a balance between electronics and the rest of the world is delivered to young readers in a direct and clever manner: “Dot forgot… she knows how to surf… to swipe… to search… and to share.” Dot and her friends are depicted as round-faced cuties in loose line and bright colour. Minimal backgrounds stylishly depict interiors; basic shapes portray a couch, rug and bean bag in blocks of flat colour. When Dot moves outdoors, backgrounds spring to life. Wildflowers arc like a wave, as Dot pretends to surf on a log. Colours splash everywhere, as Dot and her friends fingerpaint. In the end, Dot snaps a phone-photo of her friends as they all play outside, bringing home the message that interactive media is a fun aspect of a bigger world. “This is Dot. Dot’s learned a lot.”
