Pistes d'exploration

Make a list of animals you predict will be in the story. Compare and add to your list as you read. Which animal has no verse in the song? Why not?

Play charades using the animals from the story. A second clue, when needed, could be the noise the animal makes.

Rewrite the story-song, using a different set of animals (zoo, ocean, birds, pets).

Before reading, explore and practise farm-related vocabulary. Have you visited a farm? Post animal pictures around the class to help everyone understand the words here, there and everywhere.

Join in as the book is read aloud or sung. Guess which animal will come next.

Play a game in which you match animals to their sounds, or where you must find and name two matching pictures (the memory card game). Practise expressions such as my/your turn, same, different, you/I won and let’s play again.

Commentaire descriptif

“E-i-e-i-o!” Children looking for a little singing practice—or even vowel practice—will appreciate the sights and sounds in this illustrated version of the classic children’s song, “Old MacDonald Had a Farm.” Strong, vibrant images depict the farm and animals, which include the more traditional pigs, ducks, turkeys and cows as well as a few new additions: frogs and geese. Even a notably silent turtle seems to be part of the gang. Graphic forms are rendered with a painterly hand-drawn sensibility. Young connoisseurs of vehicles will appreciate Pete the Cat’s tractor and red pickup truck. Animal lovers will enjoy reading (or singing) the abundant sounds (“meow-meow,” “gobble-gobble,” “hee-haw”), each highlighted in a different colour. Readers may be tempted to add in a few verses of their own, using different animals and sounds. The rhythms, repetitions and fun variations make this a great book for engaging groups in guessing, chanting and reading aloud together.
