Pistes d'exploration

Discuss what the characters on the cover could be thinking or saying. With a partner, recreate the picture in tableau and bring it to life with dialogue.

As you read, pause before the end of a sentence and predict the rhyming word that will follow. Make your guesses look right, sound right and make sense. What strategies do you use to help you choose the right word?

Discuss what it means to one-up someone. Discuss strategies for coping with one-upping. Act them out in skits with a partner or group.

Use pictures and words to write about a time when you might feel scared and when you might feel brave.

Mime the action verbs such as splash, climb a tree, cross a river, catch.

Learn the names of animals and natural spaces (bog, hill, cave). Discuss whether they can be found in your neighbourhood.

Discuss what makes someone brave. Stop the story when the bear and the buffalo get to the cave and predict what comes next.

Echo parts of sentences after they are read aloud. Be expressive with your voice and actions.

Imagine and illustrate a new challenge for the bear and the buffalo. Write a descriptive sentence.

Commentaire descriptif

When a bear meets Boris Buffalo in a bog, they engage in a fun challenge to see who is braver. They swing between trees, cross a raging river and even wear a beard of bees. But when they stumble across a very scary cave and hear a terrifying roar, they end up huddling together in the mud, until a harmless little frog comes out and invites them in for tea. Rhyming text is fun and lively: “So bear climbed up a mighty treethe TALLEST he could findand there was Boris Buffaloclimbing right behind.” Descriptive words and verbs are conveniently highlighted with capital letters and a distinctive font. Painted illustrations fill the double page spreads with movement and expressive faces. Gorgeous red berries, pink salmon and blue streams cheerfully interrupt the dark green, brown and grey palette. A clever repetition of the little orange spotted frog is hidden on every page. A rollicking rhyming text that is ultimately about friendship and overcoming one’s fears.
