Commentaire descriptif

This peppy rhyming story makes a great read-aloud, conveying the message to young creators to let their light shine. Rosie is a passionate inventor. Since she was very young, she “made fine inventions for uncles and aunts: a hot dog dispenser and helium pants.” But after her uncle laughs at one failure, Rosie keeps her creations hidden. The jocular tone bears serious themes, encouraging girls to pursue non-traditional interests, and the need for role models and mentors, such as Rosie finds in her Great-Great-Great-Aunt Rose, “A true dynamo.” Artful illustrations use defined line and exquisite details. One image shows Rosie amid an aesthetic array of scissors, duct tape, broken toys, an unstrung tennis racquet and much more. In another, she stares into her notebook, the pages shown in a giant projection across the spread. Her pencil sketches are captioned with facts about women in aviation history. When Rosie’s flying machine crashes, young readers will relate to her discouragement and embarrassment. Hopefully, they will also appreciate the book’s wisdom, when Aunt Rose exclaims: “Your brilliant first flop was a raging success! Come on, let’s get busy and on to the next!”
