From “The wreckers are coming! The wreckers are coming” to “The people are coming! The people are coming,” this truck-themed book introduces readers to the exciting goings-on of a construction site as it gradually morphs from an empty lot into a new community of houses. Among the many trucks and workers making an appearance are cement mixers, diggers, tippers, cranes, steamrollers, moving vans, surveyors and builders. The narrative proceeds chronologically, highlighting the stages of construction from beginning to end. Its playful use of language (alliteration, onomatopoeia, rhythm and rhyme) to describe the different sounds of the trucks makes it a perfect read-aloud. Children will delight in the “whack, wallop and wham” of the wrecking ball, and bulldozers that “shave and shift and shove all day, scraping soil and stones away.” Vivid collage illustrations have a realistic look and offer plenty to point to and identify. Varied fonts and curvy text placement (positioned around the truck parts) effectively echo the chaos and drama of the building site, giving each spread a dynamic action-oriented feel. Conveyed with imagination, energy and humour, this visual and aural tour of an evolving construction site will appeal to all.
