Backyard Birds: An Introduction, Birds A to Z
Ta-da! A baby chick pops out of his shell and spends a fun-filled day learning about himself and his new environment—frogs, water, worms, body parts (feathers, beak, legs, eyes), and more. Exuberantly, he discovers that he is one “amazing bird,” that he loves to run, and that when the sun goes down, he has a new baby sister to share all this knowledge with. Told from the point of view of a killdeer chick on its first day out of the egg, the simple rhyming text captures the boundless energy of a child eager to know everything about the world—curious, enthusiastic, unstoppable: “My feet are verrrrry far away. And WHOAThe world looks BIG today.” Lively large-scale illustrations in ink, watercolour and pencil, as well as a playful, readable font complement the fast pace of the narrative. The onomatopoeic use of “Crack” in large typeface visually and aurally signals the birth of the chicks. Entertaining and funny, the book invites readers to participate vicariously in the protagonist’s self-discovery and could inspire awe at the world around them.
