Library Lion, ABC Letters in the Library
A hungry Fox chases Mouse into a place he’s never been: A library, at night, with no one but the two of them and shadowy stacks of books. Mouse convinces Fox that reading “gives you new ideas” and shows him a picture book full of chickens. It works. Fox runs off in search of a different dinner. This whimsical tale explores how books can change your perspective and open up worlds. Libraries and associated etiquette are also introduced: “Nothing here belongs to you, you can only borrow things here,” declares Mouse. Full-page colour pencil sketches of animals in browns, greys and blacks with solid colour backgrounds in reds and turquoises offset the typeface nicely. The text is simple and ripe with juicy verbs like, scurried, dashed, scowled, snuffled. Fox returns to the library, Chicken in his mouth. They consult an encyclopedia to find out whether chicken bones might be bad for him. Through a shared love of books, Fox and Chicken strike up a deal: he will dig her out of her chicken coop if she promises to teach him to read. This fun read-aloud story will encourage a love of books, reading and libraries.
