Pistes d'exploration

Discuss and define setting. What are some favourite storybook settings? What connections are there between the setting and the events of a story? For example, what type of event might happen in a castle versus in outer space?

Listen to the story without seeing the pictures. Draw what you visualize happening using only one coloured crayon. Compare your drawings with Harold’s.

Work with a partner or group. On a long strip of paper (old adding machine rolls work well), draw your own story in the same style as the author. Present your story to others.

Based on the cover page, what do you think the story is about? Note the 60th anniversary logo. Do you know of other stories that have stood the test of time? What makes a story last a long time?

Commentaire descriptif

“One night, after thinking it over for some time, Harold decided to go for a walk in the moonlight.” The trouble is, there is no moonlight and no path to walk on. So Harold grabs a crayon and draws them, thus embarking on an adventure which involves a small forest, a dragon, an ocean, a sandy beach, a picnic lunch, “a very hungry moose and a deserving porcupine” and more. Told through spare text and illustrations that feature simple lines and only three colours – white, tan and purple – the story follows Harold on his travels, armed with only a big, purple crayon and his oversized imagination. Harold, an endearing, round-headed cartoon figure, charges his fantasy landscapes with challenges and obstacles for his creativity and quick wit to solve: he sketches himself “a trim little boat” when he finds himself in deep waters; a hot air balloon to ride after falling from a mountain. This small book has a big message about all the places that our imagination can take us. A fun read-aloud, it invites pauses in the telling to predict what might happen next along the journey.
