Pistes d'exploration

What other countries or parts of Canada have you visited? Discuss how the lives of children in other places compare and contrast with yours. Reflect on this question, making connections as you read.

As you read, locate and label the featured countries on a world map.

Make a page that represents you in the same style as the book. Use either collage or online tools. Include elements such as school, clothing and food. Add labels, captions, titles and subtitles.

As you read, locate the featured countries on a world map. For each one, add a label with the appropriate child

How are the pages built? Discuss and create a graphic organizer with labels that would explain this layout.

Observe and discuss commonalities and differences between your lifestyle and those of the children in the book. List the similarities.

Notice how Canada is represented in this book. Discuss your thoughts in small groups. Using the graphic organizer that was built earlier, create a page to describe how you think Canada should be represented. Add pictures and information about yourself.

Find the pages where all the children are shown. What will you be reading about in the following pages? Predict one thing about each child and each country.

Pretend to be one of the featured children and introduce yourself to a partner, giving as many details as you can, based on what you have read. Talk about your daily life. Be sure to ask your partner questions when you switch roles.

Using the model of the double-page spreads in the book, write a short capsule about your life or that of another teen somewhere in the world. Include visuals.

Commentaire descriptif

Produced in association with UNICEF, this illustrated introduction to different children from all over the world explores the homes, schools, favourite foods, toys, activities, family life and culture of places as diverse as the Amazon Basin, New York and Mongolia. Meet Sabah, a nine-year-old Jordanian boy whose Bedouin family lives in a traditional tent during the summer months. Check out Ari from Finland, whose boots are made of reindeer fur. The children come from developing nations, tribal cultures, busy modern cities and remote rural communities; they live in areas as diverse as mountains, deserts, rain forests, plains and Polar Regions. Despite all their differences, their hopes for the future and ways of seeing the world are surprisingly similar. Accessible, fact-filled text is inserted in and around the illustrations, allowing readers to absorb bits and pieces at their own pace, without being overwhelmed with information. The reader-friendly layout includes large colour photographs, smaller labelled ones and simple maps. The children are depicted in modern rather than traditional clothing—an important lesson to readers that all cultures evolve and change over time. While inspiring a healthy curiosity about the world, the book also shows that kids are kids, no matter where they grow up. Please note, this book was republished in 2016.
