Commentaire descriptif

This book bursts with bright, vivid images—a cornucopia of children in brilliant costumes from around the world. Sidelocks flying, smiling Israeli schoolboys rush the camera in tall red hats. In Papua New Guinea, a little beauty beams from under a feathered headdress. Strong black lines cover the cheeks of a little boy in Brazil. Whether they’re in traditional clothing or school uniforms, dressing up for a special celebration or playing pretend, all these kids are clearly having fun. The language and organization of this book emphasizes the unity in this vibrant mosaic. “Dressing up means celebrating who we are . . .” shows a collection of photos that includes an image of a little cowboy, and another of a bagpipe player. The following spread shows young monks in Nepal and a Native Canadian in dancing costume, as the language explains: “. . . and what we believe.” Set in a fun, vibrant layout, language and image build a celebratory book about the joys of self-decoration, and its diverse expression around the world. Back material includes a world map and suggestions for related activities that will bring heritage and identity close to home for readers.
